Here is some good news for those who want to work in Canada. The Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE) recently signed a labor cooperation agreement with the government of Yukon, Canada, in order to increase employment opportunities for Filipino workers.
Last March 18, Labor Secretary Silvestre Bello III and Minister Ranj Pillai signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) via virtual ceremony.
According to Bello, who issued a statement via pna.gov.ph, the signed MOU aims to strengthen bilateral labor relations as well as improve cooperation between the two governments in the recruitment, deployment, and protection of Filipino workers who wish to work in Yukon.
According to the agreement, Filipino workers will be deployed under the Yukon Nominee Program to fill essential vacant positions that have recently gone unfilled by Yukon permanent residents as well as Canadians in the province.
Under the terms of the agreement, those who wish to apply will not be charged any fees by employers or agents, including immigration consultants, for selection and recruitment services.
It is worth noting that the negotiations for this MOU began three years ago. It all started in 2019.
“It has been almost three years since we’ve met and signed the Philippines-Yukon Joint Communiqué in Whitehorse, Yukon," says Bello.
Now, when will the screening for Filipino applicants begin? It will start once the Joint Working Committee approves the implementing guidelines.
There are currently 5,000 Filipinos in Yukon, the majority of whom are either Canadian citizens or permanent residents.
