Smart Face Mask That Lights Up When It Detects Novel Coronavirus Now In The Pipeline

This news might give everyone across the globe a ray of light.

A bioengineer and his team are presently developing a smart face mask touting the capacity to emit a fluorescent signal the moment it detects novel coronavirus.

A report from EliteReaders.com says that this facemask has the capability to detect the said virus through an infected person's sneezing, coughing, or even breathing.

The expert claimed that through this mask, health professionals can be able to instantly diagnose a person if they have contracted the virus without sending blood or swab samples to a laboratory.

"As we open up our transit system, you could envision it being used in airports as we go through security, as wait to get on a plane," the experts told Business Insider.

Collins added that people could wear it in hospitals, for example, while they are in the waiting room or as they are on their way to and from work.
He went on saying that the invention is still in very early stages. However, he claimed that the results seem to be promising.

Collins' team is presently planning to carry out a demonstration in the coming weeks and they are also aiming to conduct trials among those who have already been infected by the virus.

The smart facemask requires two things for it to have the senor activated, which include the genetic sequence of the virus along with the moisture that comes from respiratory particles, including saliva.

It can be remembered that back in 2014, Collins' bioengineering laboratory at MIT started making sensors that have the capacity to detect the Ebola virus the moment it was freeze-dried onto a paper.
