Why Should I Learn Martial Arts?

We’ve seen films and TV shows that have these awesome coordinated fight scenes using some form of martial arts at its core. We’ve seen how the protagonist decimates an entire gang or mob using only their fists and legs. Since mass media has overly glorified martial arts, we’ve come to think of it as a means to win using violence or some flashy way to resolve conflicts and win a fight. In fact, a lot of us have probably wanted to learn martial arts just for this very reason.

Unfortunately, the first time you enter a martial arts dojo, your dreams will instantly be shattered. It’s not the cool, superhuman activity you thought it would be. It’s not even about the fighting or the cool poses and finishing techniques. More than anything, it looks like an overly complicated dance than a means to fight.

Sports and Discipline

Before, martial arts were invented as a means to fend off enemies and incapacitate people. Of course, this was back then when countries and locales have fought with one another and technology hasn’t advanced beyond melee weapons. Nowadays, the need to learn martial arts to decimate people is unneeded and unnecessary. However, this doesn’t mean that the idea as a whole is obsolete since there are a lot of things one can learn from pursuing martial arts. Some of these things are:

  • Self-control
  • Discipline
  • Healthy Body
  • Ability to focus
  • Spirituality

Simply put, what you get when you learn martial arts isn’t the ability to break other people’s bones but the ability to improve yourself as a person. Just as with other sports, martial arts train you to have discipline in your life as well as having a healthy and active lifestyle. As most martial arts stem from religious or philosophical beliefs, it will also teach you to become with yourself and train your spirituality.

What and Where to Learn

If you are determined to learn martial arts despite being disillusioned to what it is, then it is time to take the next step and decide on what to practice. There are plenty of martial arts to choose from and even within the same type, there are still various schools under it which makes one martial art different from another.

It all depends on your preference and goal for going to a martial arts dojo. Different countries have different martial arts and even under that, different schools of though. There’s karate, muay thai, taekwondo, boxing, and mixed martial arts to name a few.

Some forms excel in upper body strength while some focus on footwork and kicks. There are others that excel in grappling and ground battles while some are geared more for fast strikes and agility. Of course, it also depends on if you wish to go professional in the sport or not. Ultimately, there are numerous choices and choosing can actually be difficult as you need to spend a significant amount of time in the dojo before you can make a conclusion.
