TESDA confirms 800k+ enrolled in platform's online vocational courses

The Technical Education and Skills Development Authority (TESDA) disclosed that at least 800,000 Filipinos have signed up for the agency’s online vocational courses since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic. The government office also revealed that 71,000 of these enrollees are overseas Filipino workers (OFWs) and their dependents.

TESDA Deputy Director General John Bertiz III announced the impressive numbers during the government’s Laging Handa briefing last September 19. In the same briefing, Bertiz urged Congress to increase TESDA’s budget due to the massive increase in online enrollment.

Bertiz concluded that a lot of those who were unable to go back to school opted to enroll in the online TESDA skills training. According to him, former rebels and indigenous peoples are also among those who enrolled. Among the top courses in TESDA’s online platform include urban farming and hydroponics.

The Deputy Director-General also pointed out the financial benefits of the courses on its enrollees. According to him, coconut farmers now earn as much as Php 80,000 after studying how to convert copra to coconut sugar. They previously only made between Php 8,000 to Php 12,000.

Post-TESDA course

According to TESDA data, almost half a million people have already finished their online courses since March. The government intensified the enrollment campaign for its online courses in March after the COVID-19 pandemic forced millions to stay indoors.

The results of a TESDA survey also confirmed that those who finish the vocational courses have an 85 percent employability rate. Their improved or new skills boost their chances of getting hired in their chosen industry. Some of those who were lucky enough to finish also chose to open their own businesses.
