Carlo Paalam clinched a silver medal in Tokyo Olympics after his defeat against Galal Yafai of Great Britain in the men's flyweight finals.
This is the country's fourth medal in Tokyo.As a silver medalist, Paalam is going to receive at least ₱17 million, according to a report from CNN Philippines. The ₱10 million will come from business tycoons Manny Pangilinan and Ramon Ang; ₱5 million to be given by the government through Republic Act 10699, otherwise known as the National Athletes and Coaches Benefits and Incentives Act; and the remaining ₱2 million will be given by Deputy House Speaker Mikee Romero.
So far, Philippines has notched one gold, two silvers, and one bronze medals in the Tokyo Olympics 2020 -- which is the country's best performance in the history of Olympics.
Boxer Eumir Marcial clinched a bronze medal while Nesthy Petecio got a silver in the women's featherweight division. Weightlifter Hidilyn Diaz, in the meantime, was the lone gold medalist.
Two Filipinos has so far notched silver medal achievements in the past, which include Anthony Villanueva during the Tokyo Olympics in 1964 and Onyok Velasco in the 1996 Atlanta Olympics.
