With razor sharp teeth and a killer appetite, the piranha is known as the deadliest creature lurking in the waters of the Amazon, or is it?
Scientists have made a shocking discovery recently about a certain organism that may pose an even bigger threat than the piranha and that is the golden mussels.
Reports hace indicated that these organisms have started to disrupt the food chain of the Amazon rainforest's waters and is wreaking havoc on its habitants.
These golden mussels release a toxin into the water that causes toxic algal bloom, causing oxygen levels to drop and killing fishes in the process. This has put the fishing industry on hold by severely affecting their incomes.
What's even more alarming is that these golden mussels could find their way to home water pipes at any time which should raise concerns for the locals according to Demetrio Boltovskoy from the University of Buenos Aires.
They are capable of surving at any water environment due to their adaptability in the water environment they're in.
Professor Maulo Rebelo of the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro said that they are looking for ways to combat these golden mussels.
He said “Without natural predators, they’re well-adapted to the tropical climate. Now, they only do three things: eat, sleep, and mate — not necessarily in that order. They mate much more than they sleep and they eat even more.”
At this rate, it's only a matter of time before the golden mussels drastically reduce the number of fishes in the waters of the Amazon and cause mkre destruction that it already has. Watch the video right down below to learn about thse nasty creatures!
